The story

Le Café de la Loire: Regional French Cuisine in Chouzé-sur-Loire

The Kitchen and Its Founder

Le Café de la Loire in Chouzé-sur-Loire serves refined Loire Valley cuisine that honors regional traditions. Chef Clément Boutreux brings professional training from Petter Nilsson and Simone Tondo into this family-run kitchen. He coordinates daily service alongside his parents, who own the building and frequently step between the stove and the dining floor. Their collaborative approach keeps every plate grounded in straightforward technique.

Signature Plates and Village Produce

The menu highlights ingredients sourced directly from local gardens, reflecting a steadfast dedication to Loire cooking. A crisp raw vegetable salad arrives with seasonal cuts, while the grilled andouillette rests beside fries that crackle like vinyl records. Evening guests often begin with toasted eel or pan-fried carp during the pre-dinner hours. Sweet finales feature a delicate fruit pavlova or a dense chocolate mousse prepared each afternoon.

A Living Antique Shop and Riverside Calm

Dining rooms blend vintage furniture with curated curiosities drawn from the Saint-Ouen flea market. Large windows frame the slow-moving river, setting a quiet pace for afternoon reading or evening wine. The establishment earned recognition from Le Fooding for its authentic character and unpretentious service. Patrons leave with either a satisfied appetite or a newly acquired piece of regional history.

Facing the languorous Loire River, Clément Boutreux (who trained under Petter Nilsson and Simone Tondo) settled down in this adorable, old-fashioned bistro-café-antique shop where you can treasure hunt for good food and drinks. With help from his parents – two lovers of the Puces de Saint-Ouen flea market and owners of the space in question (who are often around, in both the kitchen and the dining room), Clément caters to vintage lovers seeking out curiosities, gourmet diners looking for satisfying meals and aesthetes dreaming about leisurely moments with a book in one hand and a glass of wine in the other! The menu features the Loire in edible form: raw veggie salad made with produce grown in the village; perfectly grilled andouillette served with fries that crackle like an old record; seasonal fruit pavlova and chocolate mousse for dessert… And at apéro hour, let yourself be tempted by the eel toasts or the fried carp, while enjoying life’s little moments of happiness. All in all, it’s a café with plenty of character, where everyone leaves with delightful finds, either on their plate or in their shopping tote! // Henri Depecker
