The story
Il Visconti brings the flavours of Italy to the heart of Auvergne. The kitchen draws on traditional Italian recipes, composing a menu that changes with the seasons. The result is a refined, ingredient-driven Italian cuisine that has earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction.
The restaurant occupies a handsome building behind the cathedral, with a warm, 45-seat interior and a covered patio terrace that opens in fine weather. The patio, described as a dolce far niente space, offers a tranquil courtyard framed by Clermont-Ferrand's historic architecture.
The à la carte menu is served for dinner Tuesday through Saturday, and for lunch on Saturday. Antipasti include a perfect egg with mushrooms, Parmesan, and Piedmont hazelnuts, and a buffalo mozzarella with fennel and orange supremes. For sharing, there is a selection of salumi and a truffled béchamel focaccia.
Pasta and main courses showcase the kitchen's technique. The cacio e pepe is prepared tableside in a Parmigiano wheel, and a black ink spaghetti with half a lobster and crustacean bisque is a signature. Other dishes include ravioli filled with beef cheek in Chianti sauce, and a risotto with butternut squash, Gorgonzola cream, and toasted walnuts.
A 39€ fixed-price menu offers a starter, pasta or risotto of the day, and a choice of dessert. A 65€ five-course tasting menu is also available, served to the whole table.
