The story

L'Atelier du Peintre: Michelin-Starred Modern Cuisine in Colmar, France

A 15th-Century Setting for Modern Flavours

In the heart of Colmar’s historic centre, L’Atelier du Peintre occupies a house built in the 15th century. The stone walls and timber frames hold a dining room where Caroline Cordier and Chef Loïc Lefebvre welcome guests to an experience rooted in the Alsatian landscape. The restaurant’s name, “the painter’s studio,” hints at the artistry at work in the kitchen—but the approach is grounded, not precious.

The Chef and His Path

Loïc Lefebvre spent a decade refining his technique in some of France’s most respected kitchens, working alongside Christian Willer, Jacques Chibois, and the Pourcel brothers. Three years in Scotland followed, where his cooking earned critical praise and, in 2007, the title of Michelin “espoir” (rising talent). Returning to France, he opened L’Atelier du Peintre in March 2009. The Michelin star arrived in 2011 and has been held ever since; Gault & Millau awards three toques and 15/20. The recognition is a natural outcome of Lefebvre’s philosophy: “Le goût avant tout” — taste above all.

A Cuisine of Place and Season

Lefebvre describes the land around him as “rich, humble,” and his modern cuisine draws directly from Alsace’s vineyards, mountains, and waterways. He works with short supply chains, sourcing from organic producers and letting the seasons dictate the menu. The result is a style that magnifies the essence of each ingredient without overcomplicating it. A recent menu shows that clarity: green asparagus with Parmesan and elderflower vinegar; kid goat from the Vaucluse with wild garlic leaf and lemon paste; a gariguette strawberry dessert with avocado, passion fruit, and sorrel sorbet. The wine list follows the same sensibility, favouring organic and biodynamic producers.

An Invitation to the Table

The team at L’Atelier du Peintre aims to deliver a “rare gastronomic experience” in a setting that feels both refined and welcoming. The restaurant offers several tasting menus, including a lunch menu at €55 and a longer Galerie option that showcases the kitchen’s full range. Whether for a midday pause or an evening exploration, the focus remains on honest, audacious cooking that honours the product.
