The story
On the edge of Colmar’s Petite Venise, Le Comptoir de Georges sits with a terrace that extends over the river. This is a place for traditional Alsatian cooking, straightforward and generous. The restaurant has earned a place in the Michelin Guide, recognised for its honest, well-executed cuisine.
The kitchen draws on the legacy of the historic butcher shop founded by Georges Herrscher in 1955, which still operates from the same address. Meats are a focus: French beef, pork chops, and a slow-braised Herdshire beef in Pinot Noir served with organic Alsatian spätzle. The steak tartare, cut to order, is a classic choice.
The menu is filled with regional dishes made in-house. Choucroute de Papy Georges is a hearty sauerkraut plate, while the bouchées à la reine combines puff pastry with chicken, veal, mushrooms, and creamy sauce, paired with homemade spätzle. The veal cordon bleu, stuffed with bacon and Munster cheese, is another signature. Starters include roasted bone marrow, homemade terrine, and foie gras with grilled pain de mie.
Desserts stay close to tradition: chocolate lava cake, crème brûlée, and a baba au kougelhopf with rum.
The waterside terrace makes the most of Colmar’s picturesque setting. Whether for a midday meal or an evening dinner, the restaurant offers a relaxed atmosphere that matches its cooking – unfussy, satisfying, and deeply rooted in Alsace.
