The story

Rhizome in Compiègne – Michelin-Recommended Modern Cuisine Rooted in Picardy

A Return to Picard Roots

After years of travel and professional experiences, the team behind Rhizome came back to their Picard homeland to open a restaurant that reflects their values. Opened in 2018 on rue des Pâtissiers in central Compiègne, Rhizome is a deeply locavore project. Every ingredient is sourced within 200 kilometres of the city, from producers working in organic or responsible agriculture. The result is a menu that honours the region’s character: rustic, wild, and generous.

Seasonal, Local, Living Cuisine

The kitchen follows the rhythm of the seasons, crafting menus that change with what the land offers. The style is modern cuisine, but grounded in terroir. Lunch menus start at €35 for three courses, while a discovery lunch at €49 and a dinner menu at €63 offer deeper exploration – always with a choice of elegantly composed dishes such as artichoke à la barigoule with local speck pannacotta, or duck breast with peas and rhubarb. Desserts might include a mousse of local blue cheese with pear sorbet and a puffed spelt tuile, or a delicate asparagus ice cream with caramel sauce.

Drinks follow the same philosophy: organic and biodynamic wines sourced directly from vintners, artisan beers from local breweries, and farm-pressed juices from the Ferme des Charmettes. The restaurant also runs a small wine shop for takeaway.

A Welcoming Atmosphere

Guests describe the setting as cosy and cocooning, with attentive service and a relaxed warmth. The Michelin guide’s Recommended status – awarded in 2026 – recognises the quality and coherence of the experience. For those seeking a thoughtful meal that celebrates the Picard landscape without pretension, Rhizome delivers.

Rhizome? It’s a bundle of roots! And knowing your roots is important at this cozy neo-bistro which serves ingredients bearing the Hauts-de-France stamp (pork from Picardy, chicken from Le Petit Bocage, organic vegetables from Pierre Chabrol, cheeses from the Ferme de Berneuil…) in a space decked out with almond green tones, brick walls, a mini glass roof and light oak tables… And the same goes for Aisne natives Samuel Fontaine (in the kitchen) and Claire Lefort (front of house), who trained at Mère Brazier in Lyon, Saturne in Paris, Auberge du Vert Mont in Boeschepe and Bacchanales in Vence. The other day at lunch, after a cream of Soissons beans for the regionalist prelude: a peeled tomato salad mixed with smoked duck breast from the Ferme des Charmettes, and moistened by some stunningly complex tomato water poured from a jug; veal rump served pink with new potatoes, where the bitter (homemade) veal jus and the crisp purslane matched perfectly with the sweetness from the eggplant caviar; and, just as impressive as the rest, a farm-fresh yogurt mousse with the first poached plums of the season, served with homemade meadowsweet ice cream. Enough to keep you satisfied until the fall – apples, mushrooms and, who knows, wild game… // G.D.
