The story
On the edge of the Chéran river, in the quiet hamlet of Gruffy, Abîme – L'Auberge du Pont offers a modern cuisine that is deeply rooted in its surroundings. The restaurant's philosophy is straightforward: one unique menu, built around the daily arrivals from local market gardeners and producers. This is a kitchen that responds to the season, not the other way around.
Chef Maxime Ardin leads the brigade, and the evidence of his work is visible in the dishes that emerge: plates of eggs and vegetables, wild mushrooms (pleurottes), trout from local waters, a pesto of wild garlic, and a dessert of hazelnut or beetroot. The style is refined but direct, letting the ingredients speak.
The restaurant itself is part of a small auberge with five guest rooms, each named after a local landmark — Bange, Semnoz, Chéran, Revard, Pré-rouge. The setting is rural and calm, with a large garden where well-behaved dogs are welcome, and outdoor seating available in warmer months.
Abîme has earned a place in the Michelin guide, a recognition that aligns with its clear commitment to quality and locality. The menu changes with the calendar: a five-course "Promenade au bord du Chéran" tasting menu (68 €) runs from April to November, while a lighter "Cueillette et Lacustre" lunch (30–35 €) appears in July and August. A festive menu (80 €) is served in December.
For those who appreciate a modern cuisine that is both inventive and honest, Abîme — L'Auberge du Pont is a destination worth the drive.
