The story
L'Insolite is the gastronomic restaurant of the Hôtel de France, a landmark inn that has stood in the heart of Douarnenez since 1878, just steps from the old port of Rosmeur. This setting, a short walk from the finest walks along the bay of Douarnenez, already promises a pause in time. The restaurant itself has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, building on a reputation that saw it named Jeune Talent Bretagne by Gault&Millau in 2012 — a nod to the kitchen’s consistent ambition.
The chef and his team conceive every menu on-site, drawing on fresh, seasonal produce. The carte changes four times a year, following the rhythm of local producers. Dishes range from the 57€ Menu Saveur — grilled sardine with spiced onion compote followed by pan-fried pollack with pea mousseline — to the more elaborate 82€ Menu de Saison, which might feature a rolled veal with duck foie gras, or half a blue lobster in creamy coral sauce. The Découverte menu (67€) offers a “verde” raviolo with sea bream and mango, or John Dory with white asparagus velouté. A cheese trolley supplied by the affineurs of Kerouzine completes the journey.
The restaurant also serves a children’s menu (Pitchoune, 20€) and, for those who prefer to eat at home, a full takeaway service is available from Tuesday to Saturday. In fine weather, the shaded terrace in the inner courtyard of the Hôtel de France offers a quiet spot to enjoy the modern cuisine of Douarnenez. L’Insolite is a place where the history of the city and the precision of a contemporary kitchen come together — without fuss.
