The story
In the heart of the Pilat natural park, between Lyon and Saint-Étienne, Marie-Jeanne and Mickaël have opened their own restaurant in the village of Farnay. La Maison Forte has quickly earned a place on the Michelin guide’s recommended list, a recognition that feels both natural and earned for this young couple. The restaurant is housed in a stone building with exposed beams, warm lighting, and a mix of fabrics and wood that creates a cozy, elegant atmosphere.
The story of La Maison Forte is one of serious training and shared ambition. Mickaël began his career staging with Régis and Jacques Marcon, then worked with Laurent Azoulay in Méribel. He later spent three years as second-in-command to chef Antoine Bergeron at La Source in Saint-Galmier, where the team earned its first Michelin star. Marie-Jeanne, originally from Brittany, honed her front-of-house skills at Le Jardin des Plumes in Giverny under Éric Guérin, and later worked in England and at La Bouitte in Savoie, where she met Mickaël. Their combined experience — running the gamut from prestigious kitchens to star-awarded dining rooms — is the foundation of their own place in Farnay.
Mickaël’s cooking is traditional and seasonal, built around produce sourced directly from local farmers. The menu changes regularly, following the rhythm of the seasons and the chef’s inspiration. In the dining room, Marie-Jeanne guides guests through the meal, offering thoughtful wine pairings from a cellar stocked with well-chosen French references. The restaurant’s gastronomic cuisine is rooted in the terroir of the Loire, and the couple’s approach is straightforward: respect the ingredients, let the flavors speak. La Maison Forte has also been recognized by the Gault&Millau guide, confirming that this new address is one to watch.
