The story

Aux Viviers de Penfoulic in Fouesnant | Fresh French Coastal Shellfish

The farmers behind the harvest

Aux Viviers de Penfoulic in Fouesnant delivers fresh French coastal shellfish straight from the water. Béatrice Le Meur and Fabien Laupies raise their crop in the Penfoulic cove, looking out toward Cap Coz. They maintain beds of flat oysters, Pacific oysters, mussels, and pink palourde clams across the tidal zone. This direct cultivation keeps the seafood exceptionally clean and briny.

Raw selections and custom plates

Visitors gather around wooden tables set directly on the sand or shallow water during low tide. The menu highlights raw praire clams from the Baie de Brest alongside plump vernis clams harvested near Les Glénans. Cockles and whelks accompany a house-made mayonnaise sourced from La Sablaise. Guests can order tailored French coastal shellfish platters twenty-four hours ahead for immediate pickup.

Seasonal rhythms and quiet acclaim

The location earned recognition from the Le Fooding guide after critics praised the seamless blend of simple service and coastal scenery. The staff prepares raw shellfish orders with quiet efficiency, keeping the focus squarely on the harvest. Guests linger at weathered wooden benches while watching the tide pull back from the shore. The straightforward setup lets visitors enjoy pure Brittany seafood without unnecessary ceremony.

In this dreamy spot tucked away at the far end of the Baie de La Forêt-Fouesnant, Béatrice Le Meur and Fabien Laupies raise clams, oysters, mussels and palourdes clams across from Cap Coz, in the heavenly Penfoulic cove. From breakfast through apéro hour, we occupy the handful of wooden tables set up in the sand (or in the water, depending on the time of day) for a festival of raw flavors, combining home-grown briny wonders with those from fishermen friends. The night we went, low tide gave way to praire clams from the Baie de Brest, plump vernis clams from Les Glénans, pink palourde clams, plus cockles and whelks served with a delicious mayonnaise from La Sablaise (€3 a jar). There’s also shellfish, smoked fish and tinned seafood sold to go. // Marie Salmon
