The story
For five generations, the Philippe-Witdouck family has welcomed guests to Les Bas-Rupts, an authentic mountain chalet set in the heart of the Vosges forest near Gérardmer. What began over a century ago as a simple inn—a stop for walkers, a relay for horses, and the hamlet's only café, grocery, and bakery—has evolved into a refined destination while remaining firmly in family hands. Michel Philippe took over in 1960 and elevated the cuisine to a very high standard. His daughter, Sylvie Philippe-Witdouck, became master of the house and brought the property into the Relais & Châteaux fold in 2001. Today, her sons Edouard and Henri Witdouck carry the tradition forward, committed to creating exceptional moments in a warm, convivial setting.
The restaurant at Les Bas-Rupts is recognized by the Michelin guide, a testament to its refined classic cuisine that draws on the flavours of the Vosges terroir. The kitchen combines elegance and creativity, offering a gastronomic experience rooted in the local landscape. The wine cellar is a true showcase, housing over 1,300 rigorously selected references, including fine Alsace and Bordeaux grands crus alongside characterful, authentic bottles chosen to elevate every meal. A sommelier is on hand to guide pairings, and the bar provides a cosy counterpoint: a lounge by the fireplace in winter or a flower-filled pergola in warmer months, with a piano bar atmosphere on Saturday evenings.
Les Bas-Rupts sits at 800 metres above sea level, surrounded by fir forest. The chalet-style rooms combine natural elegance with authentic comfort, and the property offers wellness facilities, hiking, and ski access. Whether for a summer hike, autumn colours, or winter snow, the house invites guests to savour the tranquillity of the Hautes-Vosges, from the table to the exceptional cellar, all within a preserved natural setting.
