The story
In the quiet village of Saint-Martial-de-Nabirat, just south of Sarlat and within sight of Domme, Valérie and Jean-Marc Real run Le Saint-Martial. The restaurant occupies a building that blends local stone with clean contemporary lines, and the couple’s passion for hospitality is evident from the moment you step inside. The dining room seats only twenty guests, and there is a private salon for up to twelve, plus a terrace for warmer months. The atmosphere is warm and unhurried, a deliberate choice that allows the team to give each table proper attention.
Jean-Marc Real’s cooking is described as gastronomique et contemporaine en toute simplicité – refined yet unfussy. He works with fresh, seasonal produce, letting each ingredient speak. The menu changes regularly, and the balance of flavours is key. This approach has earned Le Saint-Martial a place in the Michelin guide, where it is listed as Recommended, as well as recognition from Gault & Millau, the Guide du Routard, and the Guide Hubert.
The cuisine is modern French, grounded in the traditions of the Dordogne but open to wider influences. A well-stocked wine cave offers bottles from all over France, and the team is happy to advise on pairings.
Le Saint-Martial is open from Wednesday lunch through Sunday lunch (closed Sunday evening, all day Monday and Tuesday). Menus range from €45 to €95, with a special menu for festive days. The restaurant is air-conditioned, wheelchair accessible, and English and Dutch are spoken. Reservations are strongly recommended – the limited number of covers means tables go quickly.
