The story
On the edge of the woods in the small Dauphiné village of Bresson, just outside Grenoble, the Chavant family has been welcoming guests since 1852. Their auberge, now a boutique hotel and restaurant, is a place where tradition and a sense of place are paramount. The restaurant’s classic cuisine is rooted in local, seasonal produce, a philosophy that has earned it a place in the Michelin guide.
The setting is as much a part of the experience as the food. Guests can dine in an intimate, refined interior or, in warmer months, in the garden under the shade of a hundred-year-old magnolia. A swim in the pool or a digestif by the fireplace rounds out the sense of unhurried pleasure.
The kitchen offers several tasting paths through the seasons. The Menu Saison, at 75 €, highlights local and seasonal products, while the emblematic Menu Dégustation unfolds over six courses for 105 €. For a more indulgent experience, the Menu Homard presents lobster in five services, its composition shifting with the seasons. A weekday lunch formula is also available from 49 €. The restaurant’s own wine cellar, La Cave d’Emile, complements the meal.
The Michelin guide’s recommendation reflects the consistency and quality of the cooking, which relies on fresh ingredients and precise technique. The atmosphere is one of relaxed conviviality – the kind of place where a meal can stretch into the evening, whether you’re seated by the fireplace in winter or on the terrace in summer. It is, as a long-time patron wrote, “the road to the happiness of living.”
