The story
Bistrot Bao brings a focused French bistro kitchen to the island of Groix, where owner Patrick Saigot converted the former Kreiz Er Mor crêperie into a spot named for local longline fishing traditions. Julia Carrio and Maxime Quiltu run the pass after training at Le Poulpe in Caudan. Their approach grounds itself in straightforward techniques and honest ingredients rather than theatrical presentation.
The bistro menu shifts with daily catches and regional harvests, keeping the service rhythm steady throughout the week. You will find a sharp shellfish gazpacho that opens the meal, followed by lobster enveloped in a rich sage butter alongside organic spinach and artichokes. A teppanyaki grill finishes the Albacore tuna steak, which rests against a smooth seaweed and cauliflower cream. Even the finish stays grounded, with a lemon cake sweetened by buttermilk and rosemary oil.
Guests choose between the outdoor terrace and an interior space defined by worn tile floors and straw-bottomed chairs. The room draws equal parts visiting travelers and local fishermen, creating a quiet hum that suits the modest scale of the operation. This unpretentious bistro setting earned the kitchen a spot on the Le Fooding roster and helped secure its best restaurant honor back in 2021.
