The story

Super Gros in Groix: A Circus-Tent Bistro with Fresh Mullet and Pinsa

From film sets to island kitchens

Super Gros operates as a lively bistro in Groix, where chef Anthony Cointre transforms island produce into generous, flavorful meals. Cointre settled on the Île de Groix after a career spanning film sets, personal milestones, and hosting the television program "Très Très Bon." He brought his cookware with him, channeling that dynamic history into a kitchen that delivers what Le Fooding describes as a blowout feast of humble yet exceptional cooking.

A circus meets the bistro

The dining space merges the aesthetics of a circus tent with the ease of a neighborhood bistro, featuring a giant slide and bold signage. Waxed tablecloths cover the tables, while dishes land on bright neon yellow cafeteria platters that reflect the chef's resounding personality. This colorful arrangement frames the meals without overshadowing the focus on accessible, satisfying food.

Island catches and Roman roots

The menu highlights daily catches, such as fried breaded mullet served with a vinegary tartare sauce made from fish pulled that morning. Kitchen staples include grilled zucchini showered in crumbled lemony feta and bone marrow paired with impeccably seasoned steak tartare. Diners frequently return for the lemony potato purée, enjoying it alongside peach carpaccio and a magnificent pinsa, or Roman pizza, garnished with artichokes, slow-roasted tomatoes, and sea beans.

Let’s give you a quick summary of the situation: a blowout feast that’s as delicious as it is super gros ! And for the more detailed version? After carrying them around on film sets, marriages and the TV show “Très Très Bon,” the excellent Anthony Cointre settled down with his pots and pans in tow on the Île de Groix for a delicious freak show, in this spot that’s a cross between a circus tent and a bistro. And if the decor is as resounding as the chef (a giant slide, waxed tablecloths, a circus sign), the cuisine is rather humbly put together. Ordered from the playful menu and served on neon yellow cafeteria platters: fried breaded mullet caught that very morning, served with a vinegary tartare sauce; grilled zucchini showered in crumbled lemony feta; decadent bone marrow with impeccably seasoned steak tartare; lemony potato purée which would be reason enough in itself to return to the island; a refreshing peach carpaccio alternating fresh peaches with those in syrup, sprinkled with piment d’Espelette… And on the next table over, a magnificent pinsa (Roman pizza) topped with artichokes, slow-roasted tomatoes, arugula, peppers and sea beans.  // Bérénice Delmy
