La Gare Guewenheim: A Family-Run Alsatian Institution with Michelin Recognition

In the small Alsatian village of Guewenheim, the Schaegelen and Seidel families have been feeding locals and travellers since 1874. What began as a station restaurant has grown into a local institution that the Michelin guide describes as “a very contemporary local institution,” earning it a Michelin Recommended distinction for its consistent, thoughtful modern cuisine.

The restaurant is divided into three distinct spaces, each with its own character. In Côté Salle, Michel and Julien Seidel and their team keep the tradition alive, serving the signature dishes that have built the restaurant’s reputation over generations – starters like the house-made Preskopf with Melfort cream, or a carpaccio of trout marinated in lemon oil, followed by mains such as roasted pike-perch on sauerkraut with Riesling sauce, or a truffled pig’s foot in crépinette.

For a more convivial moment, Côté Brass’ offers a daily lunch menu and evening tartes flambées. Meanwhile, Côté Véranda is where Franck and his team present seasonal suggestions and a Carte Blanche menu, changing with the market.

The wine list is a point of pride. Michel Seidel’s passion for wine has built a deep, wide-ranging selection that earned the restaurant the national “Wine List of the Year” prize from La Revue du vin de France in January 2020 – one of the finest in the country, according to the Michelin guide.

Whether you sit in the traditional dining room, the bright veranda, or the casual brasserie, La Gare remains a family affair – rooted in Alsace, but always looking forward.
