The story

L'Âtre – Modern Cuisine in Honfleur by Chef Julien Lefebvre | Michelin Recommended

A single address, two distinct experiences in Honfleur

Just steps from the port of Honfleur, L'Âtre is the creation of Chef Julien Lefebvre and his wife Lauriane. The name—meaning “hearth”—reflects their ambition: a welcoming place built around the fire that gathers and unites. Here, the couple offers two complementary faces of the same kitchen, both anchored in the rich terroir of Normandy.

At lunch, the Brasserie de l'Âtre serves a generous, bistronomic menu that changes with the seasons. It is a casual yet refined affair, where the chef’s contemporary touch meets the spirit of a classic French bistro. The atmosphere is convivial, the cooking direct and sincere.

When evening falls, the restaurant transforms into La Table de Julien. This is the gastronomic expression of L'Âtre, a more intimate setting where Chef Lefebvre presents a tasting menu in four, five, or six sequences. The cuisine is described as “bourgeoise contemporaine,” balancing classical foundations with modern technique and a graphic, elegant presentation. This is the experience that earned L'Âtre a place in the Michelin guide, a recognition woven naturally into the restaurant’s pursuit of excellence.

The chef and his roots

Julien Lefebvre is a Norman native who trained at the lycée François Rabelais in Caen before refining his craft in some of France’s most demanding kitchens. His career includes time with Frédéric Anton at the three-Michelin-starred Pré-Catelan, and later with the Pacaud family, where he helped open and earn stars for Hexagone, Histoire, and Divellec. He then led the kitchens at Château Cordeillan-Bages in Pauillac, restoring its Michelin star.

After two decades of working for others, Lefebvre returned to his native Normandy to open his own place in Honfleur. He renamed it L'Âtre and set out to tell his own story through the plate. His cooking is contemporary yet rooted in the classics, and he places a strong emphasis on vegetables, which he considers a centerpiece of every composition. He works directly with local producers—Rebecca, a wild herb forager, and Maxime, a market gardener from Ati Bio—to build his menus around what the land and sea provide each week.

Standout dishes and the Norman larder

The menu at L'Âtre evolves constantly, but certain signatures recur. One is the tourteau de casier served in its own head, a dish that changes with the seasons: in autumn, the crab meat is paired with a rémoulade of celery and green apples, mustard, and raisins; later, with butternut squash and clementine; in spring and summer, with fresh vegetables. Another emblematic plate is the sole à la normande, accompanied by shellfish, mussels, pink shrimp, and a creamy fish fumet. For dessert, a mille-feuilles of crêpes changes its fruit depending on the season—figs, blackberries, redcurrants, or apples.

The wine list, curated by Julien and Lauriane, spans the great French regions, and the restaurant offers carefully considered pairings, including a non-alcoholic option and a cider pairing that nods to local tradition. With its modern cuisine, L'Âtre is a place where the Norman terroir speaks clearly, and where the warmth of the hearth is always present.
