The story
On the route des abbayes du val de Seine, in the village of Jumièges, Auberge des Ruines offers a modern cuisine that is firmly rooted in the Norman terroir. Chef Christophe Mauduit works closely with local farms and now cultivates his own kitchen garden on the Presqu’île de Brotonne, between Seine and forest. Vegetables are grown without chemicals, in full respect of the local biodiversity. The result is a cuisine built on freshness, creativity, and the pure pleasure of eating.
The dining room is hushed and welcoming, with soft colours and a fireplace for winter. In warmer months, the flowered terrace opens for lunch and dinner. The atmosphere suits romantic meals, family gatherings, or business lunches, and the restaurant can host private parties for up to fifty guests.
The menu changes regularly according to what the local producers and the garden supply. Starters might include escargots from M Blot with garden squash and nasturtium, or mackerel with lemon and helichrysum. Fish dishes such as sea bass with sage emulsion and graham, or scallops from the coast with verbena from the garden, share the bill with meats like Mr. Limare’s lamb with nettles, or Normande beef with a jus infused with hay. The cheese course features a livarot emulsion, and desserts include celery with hazelnut and combawa, or Mr. Crevel’s apple with rosemary and trompette.
Auberge des Ruines is a Michelin-recommended address, recognised for its honest, personal interpretation of the region’s bounty. It is a place where the chef’s direct relationship with the land and the seasons is evident in every plate.
