The story
La Yole de Chris is the second address from chef Christopher Coutanceau and Nicolas Brossard, set directly on the sands of Plage de la Concurrence in La Rochelle. This is a proper seaside bistro – bright, authentic, and built around the daily catch. The atmosphere is coastal and warm: long tables, an oyster bar perched on a traditional yole boat, and floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto the Atlantic. Blue and wood tones, the scent of barbecues, and a steady hum of conviviality define the place.
Here, the menu changes with the return of the fishing boats. The kitchen works simply and directly – fish grilled whole over wood fire, shellfish and crustaceans cooked on the plancha. The ingredients are sourced from local artisanal fishers, respecting seasons and sizes. Dishes are honest: ceviche of the day, whole grilled fish, a platter of oysters and crevettes roses. The dessert list is equally indulgent, with options like a chocolate vaporeux or a lemon-basil tart. The restaurant also offers fruit de mer platters and a full raw bar.
The terrace is the only one directly on this stretch of beach, seating eighty. It works from breakfast through late dinner, serving coffee, oysters, waffles, and cocktails as the sun sets. The view is uninterrupted – blue water, sky, and the warm colours of dusk. Whether for a quick glass of wine with a plate of bulots or a full evening meal, the terrace captures the essence of coastal dining.
La Yole de Chris has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, a testament to its consistent quality and commitment to showcasing the best of the Atlantic seafood tradition – all in a setting that feels effortlessly inviting.
