The story
Auberge de l'Île sits on a small island in the Vienne river, in the pilgrim town of L’Île-Bouchard, south of Touraine. In season, guests dine on a terrace that overlooks the water; inside, the décor is modern and relaxed. The restaurant is run by Geneviève and Pierre Koniecko, who welcome diners with a quiet, assured hospitality.
Pierre Koniecko describes his cooking as “cuisine de Tradition revisitée” — tradition revisited. Every dish is driven by the seasons and the quality of the ingredients he selects. The menu changes regularly, but recent offerings give a clear sense of his style: a fricassée of lamb sweetbreads, rabbit kidneys and veal liver with shiitake mushrooms and mustard seed; a soft-boiled fried egg with local asparagus, corn cream and grilled bacon; or grilled octopus with Sicilian caponata and black olive powder.
Mains might include zander fillet with the same Chaveignes asparagus, mushroom cream and grilled bacon; roasted duck breast with orange-chorizo marmalade and shiitake; or a deboned pig’s trotter roasted in caul fat with pea purée and devil’s sauce. Desserts lean classic and precise: a millefeuille of Loire Valley strawberries with tarragon diplomat cream and vanilla ice cream, or a pure chocolate dessert with tonka bean.
A shorter lunch menu, “Premiers Éclats” (40 €), offers a choice of two courses plus dessert, with dishes such as pig’s trotter cromesquis, grilled gambas with pineapple and red pepper chutney, or a five‑chocolate cake.
Auberge de l’Île has been awarded a Michelin Recommended distinction, a reflection of Pierre Koniecko’s consistent, ingredient‑focused cooking and the calm, river‑side setting. It is a place where modern technique meets regional tradition, without fuss or pretension.
