The story

Café Bellot: A Le Fooding Recognized Bistro in Lille

From Pub to Kitchen

Café Bellot in Lille brings a relaxed approach to contemporary bistro cooking. The space occupies a quiet corner of the Saint-Michel district between a local bakery and an artisanal cheese shop. The venue began life as a queer and vegan gathering spot before owners Lucas Jeanne and Quentin Dupont pivoted toward daily menus. Both left advertising careers to focus on food service, earning a spot in the Le Fooding guide this year.

Seasonal Plates and Local Ingredients

Head chef Victoria Foliguet and sous chef Valentina Giacobbe run the kitchen with a focus on straightforward techniques. Lunch offerings feature soft-boiled eggs dressed in a sharp mayonnaise alongside toasted croutons. A roasted beetroot tart appears frequently, layered with fresh asparagus spears and tangy feta. Diners often order the faluche sandwich filled with marinated chicken, black olives, lemon zest, and ricotta.

Neighbourhood Rhythm and Service

The dining room opens its windows to the street, blending indoor tables with shaded outdoor seating. Children are welcomed throughout the day while adults linger over carefully selected wines. Staff pour glasses until midnight and keep light snacks ready for late arrivals. This consistent neighbourhood rhythm has made the spot a reliable stop for locals seeking honest French bistro tradition.

Sandwiched between Brood bakery and L’Affinée cheese shop, Café Bellot (which means “beautiful” in Ch’ti) is a lovely new addition to the Saint-Michel neighborhood. In this former queer, vegan pub, wine lovers Lucas Jeanne and Quentin Dupont, both of whom used to work in advertising, are now serving dishes of the day and sammies at lunch, running a small épicerie , and selling wine and snacks until midnight! In the kitchen, you’ll find Victoria Foliguet (who also switched careers recently) and Valentina Giacobbe (ex-Papillon and Rozó) stewing up mouthwatering eats, as they did for us the day we went for lunch: delicious soft-boiled eggs with a spicy mayo and croutons; a lovely beetroot tart with asparagus and feta. We couldn’t help spotting a faluche (a local, traditional bread) sandwich with marinated chicken, olives, lemon, carrots, cilantro and ricotta, and some smoking hot French fries on a nearby table. At the end of the day, the chefs place their bets on plates composed from some of the lovely products in the épicerie section. // Sofia Sétif
