The story

Magma Lyon: A Danish-Inspired Brunch Spot on Rue Béchevelin

The Founders and the Space

Magma brings a quiet Scandinavian warmth to brunch service in Lyon, founded by graphic designer Andrea Rossignol and former real estate professional Bérénice Talarmin. They transformed their Rue Béchevelin location into a study in muted tones and tactile surfaces. Sage green walls frame round dark wood tables that sit atop retro mosaic tile flooring. This deliberate curation earned the spot a place on the Le Fooding 2026 list, rewarding the founders’ vision of an unhurried space where strangers and neighbors share meals beneath calm interiors.

Coffee and Sweet Accompaniments

The kitchen sources beans directly from independent roasters in Antwerp and Marseille to keep brewing standards consistently high. Guests can order a classic Americano or try a precise V60 pour over that highlights the bean’s natural acidity. These cups pair naturally with fresh pastries baked by local creator Mado. A popular choice features house-made labneh topped with a peach and lavender coulis, balancing earthy dairy against floral sweetness.

Savoury Plates and Lunch Specialties

Morning orders frequently feature two soft-boiled eggs sourced from a farm in the Monts du Lyonnais. The simple preparation relies on robust accompaniments such as aged Comté and sharp gremolata. By midday, the venue shifts toward Mediterranean style sandwiches that anchor its brunch menu. The misobergine combines miso-roasted eggplant, creamy avocado, fried red onions, and fresh blue goat cheese inside warm pita bread.

There’s no room for lukewarm fare at Magma, where Andrea Rossignol and Bérénice Talarmin (he’s a graphic designer and art director, she used to work in real estate) are warming up gloomy mornings in their Danish-inspired coffee shop (what else?) that’s inviting and stylish at the same time: retro mosaic tile floors, sage green walls, round dark wood tables… On the blackboard menu, you’ll see specialty coffee prepared every way from the classic americano to cold brew, not to mention the V60 coffee, all sourced from their coffee roaster friends, like Andy in Antwerp and Deep in Marseille. Want something to go with your cup of joe? Grab a scone from Mado, pimped out with labneh and a peach and lavender coulis; two soft-boiled eggs from the Monts du Lyonnais farm, served with some stellar sides – Comté aged for 18 months, malossol gherkins, gremolata; and at lunch time, Mediterranean-style sandwiches, like the “misobergine” – delicious pita bread generously stuffed with miso-roasted eggplant, avocado, hard-boiled eggs, fresh blue goat cheese, fried red onions and fresh herbs… // Mado Réassouet
