The story

Mère Brazier: Legendary Two-Michelin-Star Classic Cuisine in Lyon

A Legendary Address on Rue Royale

Mère Brazier is more than a restaurant; it is a living piece of gastronomic history on Lyon’s rue Royale. This centenary institution, founded by the legendary Eugénie Brazier in 1921, carries a name that still evokes the golden age of French cuisine. Today, under the direction of Chef Mathieu Viannay, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France, the restaurant continues to define classic cuisine in Lyon, earning a Michelin two-star rating for its "excellent cooking."

The story of this address is inseparable from that of Eugénie Brazier, the "ardent Brazier" as Jacques Prévert called her. Born into a farming family in 1895, she rose from being a young, single mother cast out by her father to become the first woman to earn three Michelin stars simultaneously for two restaurants. A young Paul Bocuse made his first, formative kitchen steps here in 1946. After a period of closure, Mathieu Viannay took the reins in 2018, meticulously restoring the original 1930s faience tiles and renovating the kitchens while preserving the soul of the house.

A House of Memory and Intimacy

The atmosphere is that of a beautifully preserved family home, with small salons upstairs that retain their original volumes and a bar with a mosaic counter that feels like a tapestry. The dining rooms are "délicieusement intimiste," offering a sense of privacy and warmth that feels a world away from the city outside. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, Monday through Friday.

Classic Cuisine, Reinvented

Chef Viannay, alongside Olivier Reverdy, Antonin Roux, and pastry chef Rodolphe Tronc, creates a menu that honors the house’s legendary dishes while embracing lightness and the seasons. The great classics are regularly reimagined as "contemporary homages," navigating between the Lyonnais terroir and maritime horizons. The team, led by Stéphane Da Costa and Mathieu Poirier, with sommelier Denis Verneau, aims to make every moment a celebration of the senses, ensuring guests leave with the simple, profound feeling of having been happy to be there.
