The story
At “Manger & Dormir sur la Plage”, the salt air and the curve of the estuary set the scene. The restaurant occupies what was once an oyster hut, and that history of honest, coastal life still hums beneath the surface. As the writer Marie Sizun put it: “Sur La Plage, les yeux fermés, sous la caresse du soleil, comme on se rappelle bien.” The place knows how to make a memory.
The owners have transformed the old cabin into something both modern and welcoming. The décor mixes weathered wood with contemporary furniture, opening onto a view that stretches over dune, lagoon and sky. It is lively, unpretentious – “l’ambiance à la plage”. The kitchen follows the same philosophy: dishes that are simple, natural and generous, driven by the chef’s creativity and a deep respect for the region’s produce.
Marennes is famous for its oysters, and the menu leans heavily on the sea. This is seafood cuisine at its most direct – fresh, seasonal, and prepared to let the ingredients speak. The Michelin guide has recognised this approach, awarding the restaurant a Bib Gourmand from 2021 to 2024 and, most recently, a “Recomended” distinction in 2026. The recognition fits naturally: the kitchen delivers real pleasure without fuss.
For those not ready to leave, four guest rooms sit above the restaurant, each offering that same remarkable coastal view. Breakfast is served, and the restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner except Monday and Tuesday. Whether you come for a meal or a night, the rhythm here is set by the tide and the light.
