The story
Le Consolat in Marseille has evolved from a modest corner pizzeria into a refined pan-Asian destination under chef Mina Kande. She partnered with Artus Monat to strip away decades of wear before rebuilding the space around a sinophile vision. Working alongside Chinese chef Wen Wen, the kitchen now focuses on precise small plates that blend regional techniques with local ingredients. Their approach keeps the cooking grounded while letting bold flavors take center stage, a balance that recently earned the spot a listing in Le Fooding.
The menu relies on careful layering rather than heavy sauces to build depth. Hand-cut steak tartare arrives nestled in crisp lettuce leaves alongside white kimchi and fermented chili crisp. Haricots verts glisten in a peanutty tofu cream spiked with gochugaru, while Sichuan-style mussels and fries carry a tangy yuxiang glaze. Skate wing rests in a mirin-rayu sabayon, and plump sweetcorn fritters hide Bleu d’Auvergne cheese wrapped in smoked bonito flakes.
The dining room balances casual energy with quiet refinement through its sinophile-inspired layout. Dark wood paneling frames polished tables that catch the warm glow of suspended fixtures. Wicker chairs invite guests to linger over shared plates while sommelier Juliette Authier manages the wine program. This restrained backdrop lets the Asian kitchen do most of the talking without overwhelming the senses.
