The story

Les Lumières Reviews | Award-Winning Bistro in Marseille

A shared vision in Panier

Les Lumières brings its daily bistro rhythm to Marseille’s lower Panier district through a renovation of a former café space. Nidhal Touati left pharmaceutical work to manage the floor, joined by Humberto De Lucia, a former barista from Deep, and Antoine Astic, who trained at the Pépite pastry shop. Their all day service shifts gears with the hours, starting with locally roasted coffee and homemade granola before transitioning to a €21 fixed menu and evening seasonal plates.

Seasonal plates and kitchen focus

The kitchen leans into straightforward French cooking with careful attention to texture and balance. Thinly sliced sea bream carpaccio arrives brightened with lime juice and pickled carrots, while duck breast cooks until tender beside earthy beets glazed in a citrus reduction. Lentil croquettes provide a sturdy base for an umami-rich tomato sauce, and sweet finishes like a coconut and pineapple panna cotta offer light conclusions.

Light filled dining room

Recognition from Le Fooding highlights how this Marseille bistro maintains steady appeal through consistent execution and an unhurried pace. Large windows flood the space with natural light, creating a casual backdrop for conversation that stays lively well past sunset. Guests appreciate the reliable quality across every course, whether they arrive for morning coffee or a curated wine pairing during dinner service.

Let there be Lumières! In what used to be Les Buvards, this bistro run by three friends, Nidhal Touati (who used to work in the pharmaceutical industry), Humberto De Lucia (a former barista at Deep) and Antoine Astic (who did a stint at the Pépite pastry shop) is rekindling the flame in the lower Panier neighborhood. Here, every moment of the day has its own mood: in the morning, there’s specialty coffee roasted by their friends over at La Tisserie, which goes swimmingly with a bowl of homemade granola or a runny omelet; at lunch, there’s an affordable prix-fixe brasserie menu (€21, coffee included); and at night, dishes are served à la carte, made even better by some beautiful bottles of carefully curated wine. We opted for a vibrant sea bream carpaccio enlivened by lime and pickled carrots; tender duck breast à l’orange with textural carrots, beets and a reduction; lentil croquettes lounging over an umami-rich tomato sauce; followed by a less impressive dessert, a somewhat sloppy coconut and pineapple panna cotta. // Maud Zarella
