The story

Localino al Mare: Mediterranean Italian Dining in Marseille’s Vauban District

The Brothers Behind the Counter

Localino al Mare brings a refined Italian kitchen to Marseille’s Vauban district, guided by brothers Cristian and Kevin Stradaioli. The founders translate their established Parisian model into a lighter, sunlit format that suits the Provençal coast. Their approach strips away pretense while keeping standards high enough to secure a spot on the 2026 Le Fooding list.

Seafood and Pasta Highlights

The menu leans heavily on Mediterranean waters, reflecting how modern Italian cooking adapts to coastal ingredients. Delicate red tuna crudo arrives prepared using the traditional ikejime method, finished only with a light drizzle of olive oil. Guests frequently return for the linguine alle vongole, which glistens with briny broth, or the plump ricotta ravioli bathed in a bright lemony butter sauce. A classic tiramisu closes the meal, proving that traditional Italian desserts still hold their own against the savory spread.

Space and Setting

Raw plastered walls meet soaring palazzo ceilings to create an airy volume that feels both grand and relaxed. A large marble topped island anchors the dining room, flanked by crisp white tablecloths that balance the rustic architecture. The space extends outdoors where diners can enjoy the evening air alongside a curated soundtrack of contemporary French musicians.

You’ll need a proper Boot up the backside to reach this summit! Perched on the heights of the Vauban district, this Marseille-accented outpost of the Parisian trattoria owned by fratelli Cristian and Kevin Stradaioli follows the same recipe for success – this time with a menu inspired by the bountiful waters of the Mediterranean sea. Its elegant yet unfussy decor (rough raw walls, high palazzo ceilings, a marble-topped central island) draws a swish crowd unafraid of gluten and more than ready to put those immaculate tablecloths to work. Pumped by a playlist of French artists, the evening’s lineup of antipasti, primi and secondi hit all the right notes: delicate red tuna crudo – prepared using the ikejime method – enhanced with a drizzle of olive oil; a wickedly generous serving of vitello tonnato; linguine alle vongole glistening with delight; plump ricotta ravioli stuffed doused in a lemony butter sauce; a moreish mussel and squid ragù, mopped up with bread as if our lives depended on it… And for dessert, a textbook tiramisu with just the right amount of creaminess, much needed to soften the sting of the check! · Folayemi Abimbola
