The story

Maurice Restaurant in Marseille: A Neo-Café Hub by Le Fooding | WattAFork

From Startup Founder to Neighborhood Host

Maurice anchors a quiet corner of Marseille, introducing a refined neo-café style to the sixth arrondissement. Former tech entrepreneur Quentin Maurice completed the project after transforming a dormant PMU betting shop into a daily gathering point. His commercial background directly shapes the kitchen’s emphasis on reliable execution rather than fleeting trends, a balance that recently secured the venue a spot on the Le Fooding roster. This practical neo-café standard keeps the menu focused and the service consistently attentive.

Retro Interiors and Sunlit Terraces

Patrons generally choose between a back room preserved with vintage architectural details and a courtyard shaded by heavy canvas awnings. The floor plan encourages extended midday meals that naturally accommodate families and casual groups. Children receive dedicated attention through separate dessert plates featuring local ice cream and baked goods from neighboring bakeries. The resulting environment balances bustling energy with genuine comfort.

Knife-Cut Proteins and Coastal Classics

The kitchen constructs its neo-café menu around straightforward techniques that highlight ingredient integrity. Shellfish arrive resting in a shallow bath of clarified butter and chopped parsley, accompanied by dense loaves sourced from Pain Salvator bakery. Heartier plates showcase hand-diced Simmental steak tartare paired with young potatoes, bitter treviso, and crisp radish slices. Dinners typically conclude with a bright citrus panna cotta finished using candied grapefruit peel.

The neo-café craze has landed in Marseille! Fear not: this isn’t some lazy copy-paste of what’s already out there. That would be seriously underestimating the magic touch of former startup entrepreneur Quentin Maurice, who’s turned a onetime PMU betting shop into the neighborhood’s new beating heart. The main lure? A retro back room straight out of another era, plus a terrace shaded by stretched canvas awnings – an open invitation to long, lazy lunches with friends, convivial vibes and the odd scratch-off lottery ticket. The day we stopped by, the pleasures were simple and spot-on: shellfish glistening in the eternal winning combo of parsley and butter, greedily mopped up with bread from nearby Pain Salvator bakery; knife-cut Simmental steak tartare with new potatoes, treviso, radish and scallions, served with sleek, non-greasy fries dunked in patatas bravas -style sauce. Veggie option? Fregola sarda with zucchini. For dessert, a perfectly decent citrus panna cotta topped with candied grapefruit zest does the job nicely. Even the kiddos are sorted: after-school treats include artisanal ice cream from L’Éléphant Rose à Pois Blancs, pound cake from Sud·Sud·Est bakery and flavored waters. · Maria Mariaux
