The story
In the small town of Montendre, between Bordeaux and Cognac, Restaurant Cave La Quincaillerie has built a reputation on a straightforward promise: quality cooking without compromise, made entirely in-house from bread to dessert. The kitchen works with seasonal products bought directly from trusted local producers, using only wild-caught fish and French meats. The menu changes with the arrivals, reflecting what is good, fresh, and in season.
La Quincaillerie has been listed in the Michelin Guide France since 2026 and holds the title of Maître Restaurateur, a distinction awarded by the French state that recognises the commitment to entirely homemade cuisine. The restaurant’s approach is rooted in short supply chains and a deep respect for ingredients, paired with a carefully selected wine list focused on organic, biodynamic, and natural wines.
The kitchen offers a choice between a weekday lunch menu and a seasonal menu available at both midday and evening. Recent dishes have included a smoked beetroot and feta salad with pickled pink onions, a fillet of French yellow chicken with a ragout of summer vegetables and kasha pilaf, and a line-caught pollack with a small spelt “risotto”. Desserts like a brownie with mascarpone and pistachio cream, or a blancmanger with grilled almond gel and apricot compote, round out the meal. All breads are homemade using organic flour from a local mill, with varieties ranging from sourdough country loaf to Finnish rye.
The setting is relaxed and convivial. The restaurant describes its own ambiance as unpretentious: “Come and eat, we’ll take care of everything. Even the dishes.” Whether you come for a weekday lunch or an evening meal, the focus remains squarely on the plate and the glass.
