The story
In the heart of Montpellier’s pedestrian Écusson district, Le Bistro Urbain is the project of Chef Cédric Sangenito, who opened the doors in 2015 after fourteen years in prestigious kitchens. His résumé includes stints at Maison Lasserre in Paris, Cala Rossa in Porto Vecchio, and Le Chapeau Rouge in Dijon – houses that honed his instinct for precision and flavour. At his own table, Sangenito translates that experience into a modern cuisine that is both creative and grounded.
The menu at Le Bistro Urbain is rewritten every two weeks, following the rhythm of local markets. The chef works with a tight network of regional suppliers: Les Jardins de Costebelle for vegetables, Divin for fruit, Fébéo for meat, and local fishermen. The result is a short, focused carte that lets the ingredients speak. Lunch offers the Menu Affaire (€31, Wednesday to Friday only) – a choice of starter-main or main-dessert. For dinner, the menus grow: Oreste (€40, three courses), Echo (€51, with an amuse-bouche and a Trou Occitan), and Pandore (€63, two main courses). A vegetarian version is available for Oreste and Echo, and a cheese supplement (€10) can be added. Wine pairings are offered in three or four glasses.
Le Bistro Urbain has earned a place in the Michelin guide, a recommendation that reflects the consistency and sincerity of Sangenito’s cooking. The dining room is unpretentious, the service attentive, and the atmosphere that of a true neighbourhood bistro – albeit one with serious culinary ambition. Whether you come for a quick weekday lunch or a leisurely multi-course dinner, the focus remains on what is fresh, local, and in season.
