The story

aViné Montrichard: French Small Plates in a Tuffeau Stone Cavern

A Shift Back to the Loire

aViné Montrichard serves French small plates shaped by Arnaud Erhart’s years managing restaurants in New York. He returned to the region with his partner Tania Puell to focus on natural wines and straightforward cooking. The team recently relocated to a dedicated cellar space in Saint-Aignan to accommodate their growing wine selection. You notice that discipline immediately when tasting their crisp haricots verts dressed with peach and lemon verbena.

Honest Flavors and Simple Sweets

The dining program favors shareable French cooking that highlights fresh textures and balanced seasoning. A chilled gazpacho provides relief beside a hearty croque monsieur while a velvety vitello tonnato anchors heavier orders. Pastry work follows the same practical approach, keeping sugar levels low to let fruit shine. A strawberry tiramisu and a cherry pavlova regularly fill dessert plates without unnecessary flourishes.

Rock Walls and Communal Rhythms

The dining room occupies a cavern carved directly into local tuffeau stone. Arched ceilings rise above a long communal table draped in bright linen. A brick fireplace warms one end of the space while a cushioned seating nook offers a quieter alternative. Le Fooding recently listed the venue, noting how this grounded atmosphere turns casual visitors into steady patrons.

Located somewhere between Amboise and Romorantin, this cavern with arched ceilings carved into the tuffeau stone is rather hard to find… Arnaud Erhart, a former restaurateur in NYC (where he introduced his partner Tania Puell to natural wines), distills good vibes here, cooking up small, mouthwatering plates in a far-out space featuring a communal table, colorful tablecloths, a fireplace and a sofa corner. For us, we had a properly refreshing gazpacho; a hearty croque monsieur; crisp haricots verts served with peach and lemon verbena, or even a cheeky vitello tonnato. The desserts are just as good as the rest: strawberry tiramisu; Japanese cheesecake; chocolate-coconut pudding; or cherry pavlova. // Henri Depecker
