The story

Du pep’s in Nogent-le-Rotrou Offers Grounded Local Café Cuisine

A shared culinary project

Du pep’s in Nogent-le-Rotrou approaches local café cuisine through a collaborative lens rather than a single authorial voice. Solange Gelblat, Marine Reed, and Ingrid Heuel combined their backgrounds in journalism, hospitality, and marketing to launch the venue. They designed the space to function as both a neighborhood gathering point and a small grocery corner. The trio prioritizes straightforward service and community-focused scheduling over elaborate presentation.

Seasonal plates and careful sourcing

Ghizlaine and Lola handle the daily prep using ingredients drawn from nearby producers. Their menu favors uncomplicated preparations that let quality ingredients speak. Visitors often sample the house terrine alongside tangy pickled vegetables and fresh loaves from Maison Pichard. This focus on straightforward French cooking keeps the menu grounded and accessible.

Bright rooms and market views

Large windows frame the central square on both sides of the dining room. Scandinavian-inspired furnishings keep the interior feeling uncluttered and easy to navigate. Guests can step outside onto the terrace during warmer months to watch the weekly market unfold. The modest scale suits the relaxed pace of neighbourhood bistro fare, a balance recently noted by Le Fooding.

A lovely café- épicerie founded by three cool girls: Solange Gelblat (a former journalist, and the founder of Après l’École in Saint Cyr-la-Rosière), Marine Reed (ex- D’une Île in Rémalard) and Ingrid Heuel (who used to work in marketing). In their luminous space with windows on either side, Scandinavian-inspired decor and locally sourced goods, the small but well-stocked épicerie corner and its terrace give out onto the market square. And the menu of simple dishes (quinoa salad with spinach, red onion, feta and mint; sweet potato soup; grilled chuck steak with sesame seeds and an herb sauce; lentil, lemongrass and coconut milk dahl…) is prepared using local products by Ghizlaine and Lola… Victims of their success late in the day when we went, all we were able to taste (and devour!) was the chef’s terrine, served with homemade pickles, and good bread from Maison Pichard in Authon-du-Perche, plus a mouthwatering slice of carrot cake with a thick layer of frosting. Lunch combo menus and sandwiches to go served from Wednesday to Friday. // Marcelle Claudepierre
