The story
Tucked behind a high stone wall in the historic quarter near the château of Noirmoutier-en-l’Île, L’Assiette au Jardin is first and foremost a restaurant run by cooks. The guiding philosophy here is simple: a passion for beautiful local produce, spices brought back from travels, and recipes drawn from memory and encounters. The result is a short, seasonal carte that changes as the island does, letting the produce of the Vendée speak clearly.
Chef Dominique Soret leads the kitchen, crafting menus that balance island staples with far-flung accents. The winter menu, for example, might feature a tartelette of Vendée snails in meurette sauce alongside a crispy pig’s trotter with pomegranate vinaigrette, or a fillet of red mullet with old-fashioned mustard veal jus and bone marrow. Desserts stay grounded and satisfying: a brioche perdue with Calvados-flamed apples and salted butter caramel, or a butternut crème brûlée. For festive occasions, the kitchen pulls out all stops with a six-service feast that includes their signature “Huître Fujiyama” — natural oysters with passion fruit, a dashi kakigori, and fresh wasabi chantilly.
The restaurant’s recognition with a Michelin Bib Gourmand speaks to its consistent delivery of high-quality cooking at a fair price. The setting amplifies the experience: a sheltered garden and a veranda that open onto a small épicerie and a catering service for private receptions. Here, everything changes with the seasons, and the pace slows down — a place where you take the time to live, and to eat well.
