The story

La Clé des Champs Nordhouse: A Rustic French Bistro in a Timbered Village

The Owners and Their Approach

Franck and Aurélie run La Clé des Champs in Nordhouse as a grounded French bistro. Their straightforward cooking philosophy recently secured a listing in the 2026 Le Fooding guide for the Strasbourg region. The couple maintains tight control over every plate by sourcing ingredients locally. This hands-on method keeps the menu flexible while preserving consistent quality.

Seasonal Plates and Local Produce

The kitchen relies on basic preparation methods that highlight each ingredient. Midday tables frequently receive sardine rillettes paired with toasted bread resting on a simple garden salad. Main courses often feature a tender pork filet mignon glazed with a sharp lime reduction and served with sautéed vegetables. Evening guests typically order the Simmental beef tartare dressed with finely chopped herbs.

Wine and Dining Space

Visitors may dine inside a traditional village café room draped in linen tablecloths and scattered with fresh flowers. The outdoor terrace offers cool shade beneath the original timber frame of the former farmhouse. A curated natural wine list complements the classic bistro cooking with choices like a crisp Saumur white. Flambéed tarts provide a reliable dessert option that rounds out the meal simply.

In their timbered village, Franck and Aurélie nurture the best hidden spot in the Strasbourg region. You’ll find yourself in the dining room of a village café (linen tablecloths, bouquets of flowers) or on the terrace, in the cool shade of the former farmhouse. It’s a rustic paradise with a €12 lunch menu – even cheaper than Ronald McDonald! – with, the day we went: sardine rillettes, tuna or chicken liver toasts on a garden salad; tender pork filet mignon with a lime reduction and sautéed cabbage and zucchini; and for an extra four euros, a few juicy strawberries from the village, snuggled up against a homemade meringue. At night, there are flambéed tarts (€7) and handsome country dishes – free range veal cordon bleu, Simmental beef tartare with herbs from the garden… The natural wine collection has been carefully selected as well: a luminous Saumur from the Manoir de la Tête Rouge (€4 a glass), a Riesling from the Domaine Ansen (€29 a bottle) or a Pinot noir Barriques d’Ostertag (€29). Menu €12 (lunch), à la carte €24-47. // R.deC.
