The story

Bar Pêche Antwerp: A 16-Seat Micro-Bistro on Le Fooding's List

An improbable crossroads for a micro-bistro

Bar Pêche occupies an unusual corner in Antwerp, positioned well away from the city's fashionable districts. Friends Semmy Roumans and Esger Van Lysebetten created this 16-seat bistro to prioritize warmth and unadorned simplicity over trend-chasing. Roumans commands the open kitchen after stints elsewhere, including Veranda, while Van Lysebetten ensures the guest experience remains relaxed. Their recognition by Le Fooding has not altered their resolve to maintain friendly vibes and straightforward cooking.

Seasonal dishes with heart

The kitchen focuses on clear preparations that let the ingredients speak for themselves. Appetizers frequently feature mackerel tartare accompanied by horseradish mayonnaise and a glass of rhubarb juice. Hearty plates offer substantial satisfaction, such as oxtail served with cream of potato and mushrooms. Another option brings together homemade blood sausage with mustardy cabbage, potatoes, and bacon, demonstrating a mastery of classic bistro techniques.

Intimate atmosphere and outdoor access

The compact layout places sixteen diners within sight of the active kitchen, fostering a direct connection between the cooks and the room. An outdoor seating area extends the dining space during favorable weather, adding street-level presence to the venue. Staff interactions mirror the founders' dedication to genuine hospitality rather than formal distance. Every choice reinforces the commitment to delivering seasonal dishes with heart in a setting that feels completely unhurried.

At the corner of an improbable crossroads, lost in an anonymous part of central Antwerp, Semmy Roumans and Esger Van Lysebetten thought they were setting themselves up for a happy, hidden life by locating Bar Pêche outside of the trendy circuit. Their plan has failed, as the sixteen-seater micro-bistro quickly became a foodie trap. But the two friends remain defiant in the face of the onslaught, holding course with a combo of friendly vibes and unadorned simplicity. Semmy (Ex-Veranda) is at home in the open kitchen, sending out dazzling dishes rooted in tradition: mackerel tartare, horseradish mayonnaise and rhubarb juice as an overture – although it was a tight toss-up with the oxtail with cream of potato and mushrooms; ecstatic homemade blood sausage served on a bed of mustardy cabbage and potatoes with bacon; before a suave Dame Blanche to seal the deal. // Kiko Zushi
