The story

Benchy Paris: A Tokyo-Inspired Kissaten Serving Japanese Sandwiches

The founder and the kitchen

Benchy Paris delivers modern Japanese cooking through the lens of fashion designer Kaito Hori. He opened the location as his second venture following the izakaya Sanjo. Le Fooding recognized this quiet dedication by listing the venue in its 2026 guide. The project translates his design background into a streamlined menu built around familiar comfort formats.

The room and the layout

Visitors encounter a Tokyo-style kissaten defined by raw plaster walls and a solid marble counter. The space pairs exposed concrete surfaces with carefully chosen light fixtures and a steady jazz playlist. This unpretentious setting keeps the focus on the food rather than the decor. Guests typically grab a seat at the long bar while waiting for their orders.

Signature sandwiches and sweets

The kitchen builds its reputation on Japanese sandwiches served on exceptionally soft white bread. Tamago versions blend eggs with creamy mayonnaise and yuzu chili paste, while tuna and pastrami iterations add crisp lettuce, capers, and cornichons. A separate pastry case holds chocolate terrine, matcha cakes, and hojicha cookies alongside sweet fruit sandwiches filled with mascarpone cream.

Banzai! Now you can get your hands on a sando in the most beautiful neighborhoods of Paris! Just pop into Benchy, the second spot from fashion designer and consultant Kaito Hori – the izakaya Sanjo is his as well. In this Tokyo-style kissaten (unfinished walls, a marble and concrete bar, stylish light fixtures, a jazzy soundtrack), start by ordering the famous Japanese sandwich made on soft and airy white bread, available here in a few different versions, including: tamago (eggs, Japanese mayonnaise and yuzu chili paste), tuna (with lettuce, tomatoes, capers and the same mayonnaise), pastrami (plus red cabbage, mustard, more mayonnaise and cornichons)… and even wagyu beef, available only if you special order it a day ahead of time. Want something for dessert? There’s another sando available, one that’s deliciously fruity (kiwi, strawberry, clementine…) and filled with mascarpone whipped cream in addition to the fruit. As a bonus for all those with a sweet tooth, there’s a selection of beautiful pastries: chocolate terrine, matcha and whipped cream cake, hojicha green tea cookies… We’ll definitely be back for more! // Albertine Simonet
