The story
At 5 rue des Moines in the Batignolles quarter, Chef Wim Van Gorp runs a restaurant that feels like a genuine invitation to the table. The name says it all: “Like at Mom’s.” But the cooking behind it is anything but simple.
Wim Van Gorp grew up near Antwerp, Belgium, surrounded by the honest flavours of Flemish home cooking. He then refined his craft in the kitchens of some of the most exacting chefs in the world—Westermann, Alain Ducasse, Joël Robuchon and Jean-Georges. Those years taught him rigour, technique and a deep respect for produce. Later, travels to Tokyo, Hong Kong and New York added a layer of spice and colour to his repertoire. The result is a modern cuisine that respects French classics while allowing for surprising, harmonious alliances.
The kitchen works with fresh, raw ingredients sourced from the market each day. The menu changes regularly, but the philosophy stays constant: freshness, rigorous selection, imagination and perfect cooking. The lunch menu (entrée, plat, dessert) is offered from Monday to Friday, while the evening brings a choice between the “Comme Chez Maman” formula and the more elaborate “Le Chef décide” tasting in five courses. Every dish is built around the season’s best.
The restaurant’s Michelin Recommended status reflects this steady commitment to quality. It is a place for good living, where friends and families gather to share food that is both nourishing and emotional. The atmosphere is warm and unpretentious, with outdoor seating available in fine weather.
One personal touch: Van Gorp also created his own beer, LA WIM, brewed in Belgium since 2015. A blonde, unfiltered ale with notes of cereal and citrus, it undergoes a secondary fermentation in the bottle, much like a Trappist beer. It is served elegantly in a wine glass and pairs naturally with the meal.
Comme Chez Maman is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, with late service until 23:00 from Thursday to Saturday. It is a steady, welcoming address in the 17th arrondissement, where the chef’s talent and the simple pleasure of eating well meet at the same table.
