The story

Fantine: Grounded French Counter Cooking in Paris

The Chefs Behind the Counter

Fantine brings a grounded approach to French counter cooking in Paris, helmed by childhood friends William Marguier and Alexandre Jourdain. Marguier arrives from his own catering background while Jourdain carries techniques refined at Maison Bleue and Riviera. Their shared history shapes a kitchen that values straightforward execution over theatrical presentation. Le Fooding recognized this quiet efficiency when they listed the spot for 2026.

Signature Plates and Daily Specials

Service flows directly from a polished wooden counter where diners claim their takeaway or dine-in orders. The French kitchen shifts with seasonal ingredients but always features a reliable quiche alongside fresh salads and occasional soups. You will find substantial options like braised beef ragù lasagna paired with crisp coleslaw dressed in raw cream and tarragon. Roasted pork in peppercorn sauce and trout gravlax with dill round out the sandwich selections.

Ochre Tiles and Mismatched Seats

The dining room sits just steps from the Bourse metro station inside a space defined by warm ochre tiling and eclectic furniture. Each chair and table carries its own history rather than matching any uniform set. The layout encourages a relaxed pace while you work through a heavy lunch or save a slice of vanilla flan pâtissier for later. Natural light fills the narrow footprint before evening settles over the street.

“Fantine, she was happiness itself,” paradoxically said the man who wrote Les Misérables ¬– and you’ll find much more than big teethy smiles at this ochre-tiled eatery with mismatched furniture, located a stone’s throw from the Bourse metro station. From behind their counter, childhood friends William Marguier (a former self-employed caterer) and Alexandre Jourdain (ex-Maison Bleue and Riviera in Paris) don’t act like the Thénardiers and prepare a very exciting take-away lunch set menu, like the day we went for lunch: crisp coleslaw made with red and white cabbage, given a raw cream and tarragon twist; a huge portion of braised beef ragù lasagna; and a beautiful slice of vanilla flan pâtissier – which we ended up saving as an afternoon snack, since the lunch itself was so copious! Every day on the blackboard menu, there’s a quiche, a few salads, occasionally a soup, and three sandwiches that’ll have your mouth watering: roasted pork in peppercorn sauce; mozzarella, squash, pesto and walnuts; trout gravlax, fromage frais, dill and lemon… // Yves Inoveritas
