L'Altro Frenchie

Greg Marchand's Italian-inspired Paris address on Rue du Nil: free, modern cooking shaped by London and New York, with character wines to match.

The story

L'Altro Frenchie, Paris – Italian-Inspired Dining on Rue du Nil

A Return to First Love

On the same Rue du Nil that houses Greg Marchand's flagship, L'Altro Frenchie occupies a different register entirely. Where the original put French bistro cooking on the map, this address is Marchand's deliberate homecoming to Italian cuisine — refracted through years spent in London and New York kitchens. In his own words: "A travers l'Altro Frenchie, je reviens à mon premier amour : la cuisine italienne. Mais avec une volonté de proposer une vision singulière : une cuisine libre, moderne, sans frontières."

The result is something that resists easy categorisation. The Italian-inspired cooking here is not a nostalgic exercise — it is shaped by the restlessness of a chef whose career has crossed continents, and it shows in a menu that shifts with the days and seasons rather than settling into formula.

The Kitchen and the Table

Ingredients are carefully sourced, and the plates that emerge reflect that discipline without making a performance of it. The menu evolves constantly, so any visit is its own thing — parmesan churros have made an appearance, as have Sunday specials that suggest the kitchen enjoys a certain freedom when the week loosens up.

To drink, the list leans into Italian and Mediterranean character: white, red, orange, pétillant, organic, natural — a range that matches the kitchen's refusal to be pinned down. There are also cocktailini for those who want something with a little more invention in the glass.

Recognition and Setting

Recognised by Gambero Rosso — Italy's most authoritative food guide — with a fork award, L'Altro Frenchie carries a credibility that goes beyond its postcode. That recognition from an Italian institution feels particularly apt for a restaurant whose entire premise is a personal, modern rereading of Italian gastronomy by a French chef formed abroad.

Lunch and dinner are both served through the week, with slightly later starts on weekends, and a private room is available for those who want a more contained setting.

Fancy another serving of Frenchie? Say goodbye to quality American fast food now that signor Grégory Marchand has been hit with a stroke of transalpine inspiration, brilliantly stirring up trouble with a sprinkling of parmigiano on the most mouthwatering cobblestoned street in Paris. At this modern yet chic trattoria (a charcoal-colored storefront, retro knick-knacks, walnut wood furniture designed by Émilie Bonaventure), Italophiles wolf down classics from the Boot, expertly made with a few twists here and there: lemony smoked sardines for aperitivo , lined up on crispy crostini still hot from the pan; pizzetta topped with a San Marzano tomato sauce, ricotta and ‘nduja that’ll have you licking your fingers clean – or plump fried artichokes served with a Parmesan sabayon for dipping; a big, fat pea and mint ravioli that was refreshingly bright and dusted in pecorino – or memorable pappardelle in a rich rabbit ragù, sprinkled with pine nuts and taggiasche olives… Before the goût de grace, an homage to River Café in London: a dreamily dense dark chocolate cake with a scoop of raw cream… Italian for the day, Frenchie forever! // Angela Dolu
