The story

La Mirlitantouille Rennes: A Refined Local Bistro

The Chefs Behind the Counter

La Mirlitantouille in Rennes operates as a focused bistro where Simon Commault and Yann-Eric Toutain steer the kitchen. Both cooks previously shaped menus at Parisian venues like Passerini and Le Jourdain before settling in Brittany. They launched the project in 2019 to refine a bistronomic approach. Le Fooding recently noted their ability to walk a fine line between heritage recipes and lighter preparation.

Seasonal Plates and Evening Classics

Lunch service focuses on compact arrangements that highlight texture and acid. Guests frequently share the Albacore tuna tartare dressed in yuzu and wasabi. A tender slab of seared pork belly rests above fresh tomatoes brushed with chives. Dinner shifts toward established French bistro staples like steak tartare, house-aged ribeye, and mussels served with fries.

Stone Walls and a Vintage Bar

The dining room preserves old stone walls and worn parquet floors beneath a carefully curated vintage bar. Counter seating runs along the main wall, offering direct views of the street outside Marché des Lices. This layout encourages casual conversation while maintaining a polished aesthetic. The space feels grounded rather than theatrical, letting the food carry the focus.

Old stone walls, parquet floors, a vintage bar… A stone’s throw from the tasty Marché des Lices, La Mirlitantouille – helmed by Simon Commault and Yann-Eric Toutain (ex-Passerini, Chez Michel and Le Jourdain in Paris) – has all the hallmarks of a perfectly pitched bistro. Its name? A wink to a spot in the 22000 zipcode dear to the two friends. Since, 2019, Yann-Eric’s small plates have been steadily winning over Rennes’ robust appetites, walking the fine line between tradition and bistronomic. Take lunchtime: refreshing Albacore tuna tartare speckled with white sesame seeds, lounging in a yuzu-wasabi dressing; tender seared pork belly laid over chivey fresh tomatoes; and a rhubarb frangipane tart served with a scoop of elderflower ice cream. Come evening, the mood turns full bistro classic: sausage and mash, steak tartare, mussels and fries, house-aged ribeye… · Lester Grossman
