Vieux Pont

In the heart of one of France's most beautiful villages, the Fagegaltier family serves inventive modern cuisine rooted in Aveyron tradition.

The story

Restaurant du Vieux Pont – Belcastel, France | Modern Cuisine, Michelin Star

For more than a generation, the Fagegaltier family has run the Restaurant du Vieux Pont on the banks of the Aveyron river in Belcastel, a village counted among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. What began as a small family farm – grandmother Maria’s auberge serving products from the land and fried fish from the river – has grown into a Michelin-starred restaurant that still feels intimately tied to its origins.

A family kitchen

Nicole Fagegaltier grew up surrounded by the flavours and smells of her family’s cooking. “The house was filled with flavours and smells,” she recalls. “Our young years taught us the art of eating well, of living well, of loving to receive.” Today she shares her passion for cooking with her husband, Bruno Rouquier, and together they lead the kitchen. The restaurant’s modern cuisine respects the Aveyron terroir while offering something original – described on the restaurant’s own site as “une cuisine originale appréciée des gourmets.” This is the kind of place where the day’s catch from the river and vegetables from the garden might appear on the plate, transformed with precision and creativity.

Setting and atmosphere

The restaurant sits beside the Vieux Pont, a five-century-old bridge that arches over the Aveyron. From the dining room or the garden by the water, guests enjoy the quiet of the village and the view of the medieval castle above. It is an intimate setting, with only seven rooms in the adjoining three-star hotel, making the restaurant feel like a well-kept secret. The team also run a nearby bistro, Mets Racines, for a more relaxed take on their cooking.

Recognition and philosophy

The Michelin one star – awarded for high-quality cooking – underlines the consistency of Nicole and Bruno’s work. But the restaurant remains first and foremost a family affair, rooted in the steep slopes of the Aveyron. As Nicole puts it, “Our village and our family gave us a love of people and things, a taste for the beautiful and the good, for the essential and the joy of living.” That sentiment carries through every plate of modern cuisine served at the Vieux Pont. Whether you come for a long lunch on the terrace or a dinner that lingers into the evening, the welcome is genuine and the cooking, quietly exceptional.
