The story
In the small Alsatian village of Roppenheim, 40 kilometres north of Strasbourg and 20 from Haguenau, a timber-framed inn dating from 1738 still welcomes guests with the same warmth its walls have known for centuries. This is Auberge à l'Agneau, a family restaurant now run by the fourth generation, Jacqueline and Marc Stephan.
The house specialises in Alsatian cuisine — hearty, rooted, and honest — yet the Stephans also offer a selection of “Maison” suggestions that add a personal touch. On the menu you’ll find classics like choucroute aux poissons (a fish version of the region’s iconic sauerkraut), as well as a well-executed côte de boeuf and a finely chopped tartare de viande. The cooking is grounded in local tradition, but the kitchen is not afraid to branch out.
The restaurant enjoys a Michelin Recommended status, a quiet nod to its consistency and the care that goes into every plate. For a restaurant that began as a village inn, this recognition speaks to both its history and its ongoing commitment to quality.
Set just three minutes from the Roppenheim Outlet shopping centre, the auberge is an easy stop for lunch or a leisurely dinner. Its setting — typical Alsatian charm, with a story behind every beam — makes it a fitting place to taste the region’s food, prepared by a family that has been doing precisely that for four generations.
