The story

Café Bertro Lamballe-Armor: A Historic Village Bistro on Le Fooding 2026 List

A familiar corner reimagined

Frédérique Garel stepped into the former village grocery and tobacco shop on Rue du Berry after Serge and Babeth Bertro retired. She brought Léa Guillot and Morgane Denais into the fold to manage daily operations. The trio preserved the building’s long history while introducing a cleaner kitchen workflow and sharper service standards. Le Fooding recognized this steady evolution when they placed the establishment on their 2026 list.

Seasonal plates and local sourcing

The kitchen operates as a coastal bistro, building its lunch menu around rotating regional staples rather than a fixed weekly schedule. Monday mornings feature kig ha farz, a hearty Breton stew that anchors the midweek service. Friday evenings shift toward thin buckwheat galettes and an expanding selection of small plates for evening diners. Summer tables switch to steamed mussels paired with crisp fries.

Light filled rooms and relaxed pacing

Sunlight streams through a restored panoramic veranda that now serves as the main dining space. Guests who prefer fresh air gather on the wide terrace overlooking the quiet street. Palets bretons return to the dessert counter alongside simple fruit tarts. Staff readily pair these straightforward courses with wines and ciders from neighboring vineyards. This unpretentious regional bistro keeps prices grounded while maintaining consistent quality across every course.

One seriously fresh bistro! Frédérique Garel has packed up her billigs and bobs, leaving Rennes to take over the legendary village bar-grocers-tobacco shop ran by Serge and Babeth Bertro, on a still relatively undiscovered stretch of coastline. Backed by Léa Guillot (ex- Origines ) and Morgane Denais, and embraced by the locals, the new owner has given the place a thoughtful refresh: the dining room under the panoramic veranda has been revived, the vast terrace is back in play and palets bretons have made their return. On the shelves, local organic produce sits alongside everyday staples – cigarettes, Panzani pasta, Orangina – for a shopping basket melting pot firmly rooted in reality. And to nibble on? A lunch menu that offers plenty of bang for your buck, from kig ha farz (a traditional Breton stew) on Mondays – or moules-frites in the summer – to galettes on Fridays, plus small plates on Friday and Saturday evenings, all best enjoyed with a drink sourced from nearby producers. · Roland Tarte
