Bocata in Saint-Jean-de-Luz: A Simple Sandwich Bistro Recognized by Le Fooding

The kitchen behind Bocata

Bocata in Saint-Jean-de-Luz operates as a straightforward sandwich-focused bistro where Marieke Pierlot and Lucas Henriette keep things simple. The pair developed this sandwich kitchen after honing their skills at Maitenia in nearby Ciboure. Their refusal to chase trends secured a spot on the 2026 Le Fooding list. Gérard Roubeix highlighted how the menu sticks to honest ingredients instead of complicated presentations.

Plates that draw a crowd

Morning visitors order tomme cheese spreads and charcuterie sourced from Boucherie des Familles alongside homemade oat cookies or blueberry financiers. Lunch brings heavier plates like a thick bun stuffed with mackerel escabèche, pickled peppers, cucumber and lettuce. The blackboard also features a potato tortilla layered with fresh avocado slices or a light cauliflower tabbouleh. Guests finish with the chocolate tart finished with salted caramel.

Space and surroundings

A bright neon sign marks the storefront across from the Saint-Jean-de-Luz railway station. Inside the space displays chipped ceramic tiles and mismatched second-hand tables that invite lingering. Patrons often grab a tray to eat outdoors while watching the street activity roll by. The setup encourages quick takeaway orders or relaxed afternoon bites without any formal service rush.

Le Fooding — Listed

After working at Maitenia in Ciboure, Marieke Pierlot — alongside Lucas Henriette — is opting for simplicity itself at this cute little bistro (a neon window display, chipped tiling, second-hand furniture) across from the Saint-Jean-de-Luz train station. There, starting at 10 a.m., the chef whips up sandwiches filled with cheese (cow’s milk tomme, Saint-Nectaire from Beñat…) or charcuterie from the Boucherie des Familles (ham, lomo , saucisson, chorizo), along with some homemade sweets – bread pudding, oat cookies, blueberry or apricot financiers. Come lunchtime, the sandwiches get kicked up a notch, like this sensational bun, copiously filled with a lively mackerel escabèche, big slices of pepper, cucumber and lettuce. Also spotted on the blackboard menu: a tortilla topped with sliced avocado or a cauliflower tabbouleh, and for a sweet note after all that, a delightful chocolate / salted caramel tart. // Gérard Roubeix
