The story

Café Belardi in Saint-Jean-de-Luz Offers a Refined French Bistro Experience

The kitchen and its founders

Chef Agathe Baulu leads the kitchen at Café Belardi in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, bringing a grounded approach to French bistro cooking. She draws on training under Michel Guérard, the Bras family, and Providence in Los Angeles to shape her daily service. Partner Quentin Pierre Antoine manages the wine program using his background in specialized retail. Their combined focus keeps the menu honest and tightly paced.

Dishes and seasonal menus

The lunch service offers a fixed menu around twenty dollars that highlights summer harvests. Marinated heirloom tomatoes rest alongside a sharp arugula and caper salad before guests move to the main course. Line-caught meagre meatballs simmer with octopus and potatoes in a bright tuna broth finished with Espelette pepper. Evening plates shift toward sharing formats like albacore tuna belly or a comforting Palestinian omelet.

Room and atmosphere

Le Fooding recognized the venue for carving out a distinct identity within a crowded local dining scene. A wooden billiard table anchors the center of the room while seventies pendant lights cast a warm glow over brown tile floors. Shelves lined with culinary books frame an original zinc counter that invites casual conversation. This layout keeps the space feeling relaxed for anyone seeking a proper bistro meal.

In a neighborhood where bistros abound, this cheerful Saint-Jean-de-Luz spot stands out from the crowd – thanks, in part, to the billiard table taking center stage in the middle of the dining room. Seventies light fixtures, an original zinc-topped bar, brown tile floors and cookbooks make up the rest of the decor, in a space run by a winning duo: oenophile Quentin Pierre-Antoine, who used to work at the Toulouse wine shop Poison , and chef Agathe Baulu, who has done stints under Guérard, Bras and at Providence. The latter cooks up a stellar lunch menu for twenty bucks: delicious peeled heirloom tomatoes marinated in olive oil and served with crushed tomatoes and onions, alongside an arugula, celery and caper salad; flavor-packed, herby, line-caught meagre meatballs buddying up with octopus and potatoes in a memorable tuna broth – all of which was topped with mild Indian chili and piment d’Espelette; and for a subtly sweet dessert, plum tart with Bourbon vanilla crème anglaise. At night, expect options like Palestinian omelet, albacore tuna belly and floating island to share (or devour solo, depending on how hungry you are!), all served à la carte, in addition to well-chosen wines. // Loulou Pic
