The story

Le Komptoir des Amis | Saint-Jean-de-Luz Bistro & Local Terroir Cooking

The kitchen and its origins

Le Komptoir des Amis brings a grounded bistro sensibility to Saint-Jean-de-Luz after native son Guillaume Clément returned home to transform the former O’Pintxos space. He traded daily tapas service for a kitchen that follows the rhythms of the Atlantic coast and surrounding farms. A young team now manages the pass, drawing on travels abroad while keeping Basque terroir at the center. Their approach earned a spot in Le Fooding’s 2026 guide, which praised the careful sourcing and seasonal pacing.

Daily preparations and shared plates

The menu shifts twice each day, dictated by morning landings at Ciboure and weekend weather patterns. Lunch offers a straightforward structure, while evening service expands to ten or fifteen small plates designed for sharing across the table. Standout preparations include creamy Banka trout rillettes paired with crisp asparagus ribbons, alongside breaded bonito crudo finished with a light wasabi cream. Meat courses regularly feature Kintoa pork loin cooked in traditional piperade or flank steak served with fresh broad beans.

The dining room and wine program

Guests choose between a contemporary hall with waxed concrete floors and suspended wicker lamps, or a south facing terrace opposite the bus interchange. Morning coffee comes from Deuza, a century old local roaster, while dinner drinks rely on independent vignerons practicing biodynamic viticulture. These cellar partners avoid chemical interventions entirely, allowing the bottles to reflect the specific soils they cultivate. This fluid arrangement supports an unpretentious bistro setting where conversation flows easily between courses.

Yet another lover of fines food has fallen victim to the game! After working in the car rental business, Saint-Jean-de-Luz native Guillaume Clément returned home and took over the old O’Pintxos restaurant. The result? No more tapas! Now it’s all about the precious dishes cooked up by Melissa and her team! Savor them in bursts at either the urban-looking bar or in the contemporary dining room (waxed concrete, wicker suspension lamps). For us, the night we went: stewed conchiglioni stuffed with pork loin in piperade ; creamy Banka trout rillettes and crisp asparagus ribbons; breaded bonito crudo with a creamy wasabi mayo; remarkable flank steak with broad beans, peas and homemade chips; before a (not so runny) chocolate lava cake topped with caramel whipped cream. // N.K.
