The story
Le Comptoir Breizh Café is the Saint-Malo outpost of Bertrand Larcher’s celebrated crêperie family. Larcher, a Breton who lived in Japan, built Breizh Café on a simple idea: treat buckwheat – sarrasin – with the same reverence as the finest produce. "Le sarrasin, c’est l’avenir de la culture en Bretagne," the restaurant states, and the menu proves it.
The Michelin Bib Gourmand recognises good quality, good value cooking, and Le Comptoir delivers exactly that. The galettes are made with organic Breton buckwheat, cooked on traditional krampouz griddles, and topped with exceptional ingredients: Bordier butter, Label Rouge salmon, farm eggs. Le Fooding called them "des galettes de compète!" – top-tier galettes. The result is a plate where the nutty sarrasin shines, amplified by generous butter and precise technique.
Larcher’s time in Japan influences the approach: respect for the ingredient, simplicity, and precision. The same buckwheat that fuels Breton crêperies is a staple in Japanese kitchens, and that shared reverence runs through every dish. At Le Comptoir, you’ll find classic Breton crêpes de froment alongside inventive galettes that honour both traditions.
Breizh Café is committed to organic, local agriculture. The restaurant works directly with Breton farmers to source buckwheat, supports biodiversity, and minimises waste. The result is a meal that feels both rooted in terroir and quietly modern – a place where the flavours of Brittany are served with integrity, not fuss.
A few steps away, the Maison du Sarrasin épicerie and the Galerie Breizh Café extend the experience, but the heart of it all is the Comptoir: a warm, unpretentious room where a perfectly cooked galette is reason enough to visit Saint-Malo.
