The story

La Cabane du Feneau: Fresh Seafood Dining in Saint-Martin-de-Ré

Family roots and counter service

La Cabane du Feneau serves prime seafood in Saint-Martin-de-Ré after more than twenty years operating in the salt marshes near La Couarde. Brothers Justin and Guillaume Palvadeau now run the kitchen. They keep the lunch menu strictly focused on live shellfish, skipping heavy sides entirely, so service moves quickly at the wooden counter. This straightforward approach to coastal cuisine keeps the plates honest.

Signature platters and seasonal finishes

Diners typically build their meal around the Cabane plate, which layers six oysters, six whelks, and six shrimp on a single tray. Larger appetites often choose the Grande Marée, adding half a crab and chilled langoustines to the mix. The kitchen also prepares house-made fish rillettes, pan-seared mussels, and a rich soup that changes with the morning catch. Sweet endings arrive as a dense salted caramel rice pudding, a smooth fruit coulis panna cotta, or a light nougat glacé.

Marshland seating and evening rhythms

The dining areas sit inside the wetlands, shaded by thick honeysuckle vines and sheltered by a wide terrace during coastal winds. Visitors who prefer open air claim tables under woven sunshades in the garden. Le Fooding recognized this unpretentious setting when it listed the venue for its 2026 guide. Shared maritime fare travels across wooden tables alongside chilled wine and local bread delivered straight from a nearby Jarne baker.

Brothers Justin and Guillaume Palvadeau have taken over their parents’ cabana at the heart of La Couarde’s salt marshes. At this nautical tavern, seated in the shade of the giant honeysuckle vines, savor flavor-packed fines de claire oysters, which have been freshly plucked from the coastal waters and are even better when washed back with a glass of Cheverny; a Cabane plate, loaded with palourde clams, whelks, oysters and shrimp; or the massive Grande Marée platter for people who can’t get enough of the sea! At La Cabane du Feneau, everything is extremely fresh, including the mayonnaise! And if you’re in the mood for a hot meal, opt for the unbeatable fish soup; the classic mussel and palourde clam chowders; and best of all, the sardines marinated in olive oil and lemon, a true treat. For dessert, there’s a well-made salted caramel rice pudding. // Louise Delange
