The story

Auberge Saint Fiacre, Valençay – Michelin Bib Gourmand in the Berry

Setting and History

Auberge Saint Fiacre sits in the flower-decked village of Veuil, between Touraine and Berry, just five minutes from the Château de Valençay. The building is a genuine 17th-century house, originally a home, a grocery, and the village bar, transformed into a restaurant in the early 1970s. It stands at the foot of the majestic ruins of a Renaissance château, beside an ancient fountain, surrounded by carefully preserved greenery. Katia and Arnaud Gauthier have been welcoming guests here since 2001.

Cuisine

The kitchen, led by Arnaud Gauthier, offers modern cuisine that respects the seasons and local producers. The Michelin Bib Gourmand recognizes the quality and value of the cooking. Dishes change with the market, but the menu has included a Moelleux de brochet with green asparagus from Loïc Lextériat’s Berry farm, and a Bulle de carotte with burnt bread, fresh goat cheese from Mosnay, and smoked duck breast. Main courses like Filet de dorade with cauliflower cream and sweet-sour notes, or Dos de canette rôtie with red cabbage compote and black shallot jus, show the kitchen’s balance of technique and flavour. Desserts such as a strawberry panna cotta with lemon and almond biscuit, or a morel crème brûlée with chocolate and a crisp tuile, round out the meal.

Atmosphere

Inside, the dining room is warm and rustic, with dark beams polished by years of fireside meals. In good weather, the shaded terrace under century-old chestnut trees, accompanied by the murmur of the fountain, is a peaceful place to linger. The restaurant is a member of the Tables Gourmandes du Berry and holds the Maître Restaurateur label, reflecting its commitment to home-made, quality cooking. Several menus are offered, including a lunch formule, the Saint Fiacre menu in three or four services, and a five-course blind “Confiance” menu for those who want to trust the chef’s inspiration.
