The story

Les Fontaines Bistro Dining in Vernoux-en-Vivarais | Le Fooding Listed

The Kitchen and Regional Staples

Les Fontaines serves straightforward French bistro cooking from its location in Vernoux-en-Vivarais. Jean Pointet leads the kitchen after cutting his teeth at Café Bellecour in Lyon. He favors precise technique over theatrical presentation, which shows in a lunch set menu featuring hard boiled eggs dressed in rich mayonnaise and hand cut steak tartare served with soft ratatouille. Dinner plates lean heavily on familiar classics such as carp quenelles, fresh Ardèche trout, and beef chuck pressé.

The Space and Setting

A solid stone structure built as a former bar and tobacconist sits on the edge of a deep ravine. Large windows and an outdoor terrace frame direct views down into the valley below. Inside the dining room, the layout follows a traditional bistro arrangement with a substantial wooden bar backed by wood paneled walls and plush red leather banquettes. Photographer Philippine de Joussineau manages the front of house while maintaining a calm and grounded presence.

Daily Rhythm and Service

Early morning guests arrive at seven thirty to enjoy the quiet terrace before the sun climbs over the hills. The kitchen maintains a steady pace through lunch and dinner, ensuring every plate leaves the pass with consistent seasoning. A simple crème brûlée closes out the meal without attempting anything overly elaborate. Recognized by Le Fooding for its reliable standards, this neighborhood bistro remains a quiet anchor for locals and passing cyclists alike.

Le Fooding — Listed

A solid stone building (once a bar-tobacconist-newsagent) clings to the edge of the ravine, with a terrace that peers straight down into the valley. Inside, it’s textbook bistro comfort: a big wooden bar, wood-paneled walls and red leather banquettes. The result? A pitch-perfect bistro run by a young couple of former Lyonnais who swapped city life for fresh air in Boffres. Jean Pointet, who cut his teeth at Café Bellecour in Lyon, is in the kitchen, while Philippine de Joussineau, a photographer, sets the tone front of house. Take that lunchtime, with the impeccably judged set menu: hard-boiled eggs lavishly coiffed with mayo; perfectly seasoned hand-cut steak tartare, served with ultra-soft ratatouille and new potatoes; and a crème brûlée that gets the simple things just right. Come evening, the menu leans into comforting staples – carp quenelles, Ardèche trout, beef chuck pressé , Bourdaloue tart. Bonus points for early birds: doors open at 7:30am sharp to fuel locals, cyclists and wandering souls, who soak up the hush of the terrace in the first light of day · Yanath Kandal
