The story

Ducasse au Château de Versailles – Le Grand Contrôle: French Gastronomy in Versailles

A Dining Room Within the Palace Walls

Ducasse au Château de Versailles – Le Grand Contrôle occupies a singular place in French gastronomy. It is the only restaurant set within the historic precincts of the Château de Versailles, housed in the meticulously restored Le Grand Contrôle building—originally built in 1681 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart. Here, Chef Alain Ducasse, a chef with eighteen Michelin stars, turns his attention to the culinary traditions of the Grand Siècle.

The space recalls 18th-century splendour: period furniture, fabrics recreated by Maison Pierre Frey from Versailles archives, and lighting that mimics candlelight. The restaurant offers multiple dining experiences timed to the rhythms of the royal day: Le Lever Royal, Le Déjeuner Gastronomique in the Grand Cabinet, and Le Festin Royal. Each is a modern interpretation of historic court meals, executed with Ducasse’s signature precision and respect for seasonal produce.

Royal Flavours, Modern Precision

The menu draws on classic French cuisine and the rich heritage of Versailles. Dishes centre on the best ingredients of each season—vegetables, fruits, meats—prepared to reveal their essential character. The wine list pairs French classics with exceptional bottles, and the service is a model of French formality and warmth.

The restaurant’s Michelin one star recognises the high level of cooking achieved here. But beyond the star, the experience is about immersion. Guests are invited to explore the château after hours, wander the gardens, and dress in period costumes for a night at court. The food is the centrepiece of a wider historical narrative, making this one of the most distinctive addresses for classic French cuisine in the world.

A Feast for All Senses

Whether you are a hotel guest or a visitor for the day, lunch or dinner at Ducasse au Château de Versailles is an event. The restaurant also offers a Tea Time inspired by Marie-Antoinette and a Sunday brunch. The setting—overlooking the Orangery gardens and the Cent Marches—adds to the sense of stepping back in time.

In a city synonymous with monarchy and gastronomy, this restaurant delivers on both counts. It is a place where history is not just seen but tasted.
